Dream Vacation by John V.

If I had to choose a friend or a family member to come with me to a country it would be my friend Alex. We would go to Japan and have the best sushi ever. Also we would see Kei Nishikori play at one of the Japanese opens. Then to finish off our vacation we would go to the zoo and feed the elephants. Alex and I hailed a cab to the airport. Then we got on the plane and said good-bye to a lovely time in Japan.

Postcard from Lydia

    To: Lenny

 Dear Lenny,
On my trip to the moon my rocket ship must have taken a wrong turn because I
ended up on Mars. People think there is no life on Mars, but they are wrong I met
them. They are green and have antennas. They are very nice and helpful so they
Gave me a place to stay and helped me fix my rocket ship. When my rocket ship
was fixed I had to say goodbye to them it was sad, but I couldn’t wait to go back to
Earth to my house after my trip to Mars which was supposed to be to the moon,

Post card from Texas

What's up dog?

This is a photo of Sarah with her friends Peter and Hana.  They live in Gavelston, Texas.

This is a photo of Sarah with her friends Marta, Alberto, Richard, and Linda. This picture was taken at the summit of Mt. Bonnell.

These dogs were on the side of a building in New Orleans and I thought they'd make a nice cover for a postcard.

Voodo Queen of New Orleans

These pictures are of the burial vault of Marie Laveau, the Voodo Queen of New Orleans.  The tombs are known as "oven" vaults and are designed for above ground burials.  This is needed in New Orleans because the city is below sea level.

The markings are made by people that believe in Voodo and are made as an offering to Marie Laveau in the hopes that she will hear their prayers and answer them.  It is against the law to mark "desecrate" burial sites.

OK This Week - postcard from Lennie and Dr. O.

S'up New Schoolerz?

Sarah and I had a great Thanksgiving week visiting friends in Gavelston and Austin Texas.  We've done a lot of driving and tonight we are at Sarah's brothers house at Lake Ten Killer in Oklahoma. I hope you're all having a great weekend and I look forward to seeing you on December 9th.  I'll post some more pictures from our trip later this week, here;s a cool pic, one of my favorites.

Palm Tree Village by Morgan W.

PALM TREE VILLAGE

In Palm Tree Village coconuts are the only thing you eat and drink. You can jet ski, swim, sky dive and stay in hammock huts on the beach. A hammock hut is made out of palm tree wood and you sleep in hammocks. Your blankets are palm tree leaves. The kitchen is filled with coconuts and they're delicious. The water is Caribbean blue, with two little islands. One island is for jet skiing and one is for sky diving. It never rains. It is always sunny and calm, never windy. In the morning you can see beautiful dolphins doing tricks. There are no cars only golf carts. This is a great island!

Post Card from Iguana Peak by Morgan W.

IGUANA PEAK

We took a chair lift made of lizard tails to the top of Iguana Peak. From there we skied down through an enchanted forest of Iguanas. The weather is sunny at the base and snowy at the top. At the bottom of the peak there is a lagoon where the iguana bathe and you can swim with them. We skied down the mountain until we got to a sunny spot where our skies turned into flippers and we dove into the salamander pool. The salamander pool is where special salamanders can breath under water and swim with you. We stayed in a lizard hut where lizards made hot chocolate for us. It was a lot of fun!

Postcard from NOLA

Dear New Schoolerz.  Sarah and I made it to New Orleans Wednesday night after a 33 hour train trip.  See image #1 for proof of arrival.  New Orleans is famous for Jazz music, we saw a jazz concert at the US mint in NOLA, see image # 2. The people are super friendly here, everyone says hello to us with few exceptions see image # 3. Image #4 is of the State house, NOT Disney world!  The buildings are very pretty, image # 5 is just one of the houses we like. I'd have more to say but we're off to play, see you soon.

Post Card #2 from my Vacation with Dr. O

Hey ya, New Schoolers. Ho ya doin'?

Sarah and I have been on the train now for about 20 hours and counting.  Last night, somewhere around Carolina our train struck a car that stalled at the railroad crossing!  At least that's the story we heard this morning at breakfast.  Sarah remembers the train stopping suddenly and not moving for a couple of hours, I remember dreaming about swimming with dolphins and Boston Creme Donuts?  Because of our accident and delay we'll be getting to New Orleans later than expected and well past my regular bed time but I'll deal with it. Thursday is going to be our first day in the Big Easy, we'll be eating oysters and listening to jazz music at the Preservation Hall.  I got a post card from Sara J. who visited China in her dreams and it sounds like she had a great time.  I'll post that when I get some place where I can work that isn't so cramped.

This is a picture of a pipe fish that the Jr. Rangers found in the Field Station salt marsh this summer.
Write a report/story about it if something comes to mind.

Post Cards from my vacation with Dr. O.

Howdy from Boston MA.  Sarah and I are here at the Park Plaza Hotel in beautiful downtown Boston MA. We left Nantucket a day early in advance of what looked to be a bad weather day today.  We stayed last night in Hyannis and took a bus this morning into the hub of the universe.  How was the weather at home?  Did you have the high winds and heavy rain that the weatherman warned us about? The Park Plaza is a really nice hotel and not very far from China town.  Sarah and I walked around the city for a while then went and had a late lunch/early dinner.  We're back at the hotel now, relaxing a bit before we head out to wander around this great big beautiful metropolis for a bit before we hit the hay.  Tomorrow we get on a train that will take us first to New York, then on to New Orleans.  Sarah knows NOLA very well, she studied for her degree in that area so she's going to show me all around.  I got some new stories for the Blog page and I hope to get more in the next few days and weeks.

Holla!

ps  This is a picture of a Torpedo Ray that washed ashore in Polpis Harbor last week.  Y'all should look them up on the web.  Try typing Sarah Oktay+Yesterday's Island+Torpedo Ray into your search engine with Mom and Dad.  I think you'll find it very interesting.

If a monster joined by Anjali D.

If a monster joined

If a monster joined Mookie’s class, Mookie would get a monster skateboard and ride on the skateboard with the monster. He would name the monster the Mookinator.

If a monster joined Sonia’s class, Sonia would play kickball with it. Sonia would call it Monster-monster.

If a monster joined Caroline’s class, Caroline would say, “Wow, cool.” Caroline would name it Stacy.

If a monster joined Anjali’s class, Anjali would bake a welcome pie for her to eat it all. She would name the monster Macintosh.

If a monster joined Lenny’s class, the whole world will come to an end.

The Nantucket News by Sara J.

Breaking news! The Laurie Ann Barns ship found washed up!!  The story:  Many years ago, the Laurie Ann Barns had sunk, and over 10 people out of 250 died. The ship was used for passengers from England to visit our small island. Fortunately they were just getting started, so no passengers were aboard; only the crew and a few nantucketers. The ship sank 40 miles out to sea, the captain, 8 crew members and the cook died. The ship sank because of a fire. First the main sail caught on fire, then the boat itself caught on fire. Life rafts were lowered and  everyone got off except for the 10 unfortunate people. The cook got trapped in the kitchen, the 8 crew  members drowned. And the captain let a little boy take his spot on the life raft.. The little boy had gotten separated from his parents, so he hid in a barrel luckily the captain found him.

Maisy by Chloe C.

I remember when my cat Maisy died. I was at a sleepover at my friend Annie’s house and she had just dropped me off at the yacht club. My sister walks in crying, and hugging my mom. I ask whats wrong but my mom does not answer, but says its time to go. When we arrive home my mom takes us into the kitchen and Maisy is on the floor hurt. She had, had a stroke the night before. The vet came an hour later and put her down. We cried a lot. We brought her later that night to the MSPCA to be cremated. We miss her so much.

Our House is alive! by Chloe C.

My house is an interesting place. We have 2 dogs and 3 cats, always a lot of people and Mary. Mary is our house’s name. Yes our house is alive.
It all started one evening when two friends and I read about a ghost ritual ceremony. Of course we wanted to do it. We went up to my attic and set up a spherical circle, and started chanting. After a while the attic started vibrating, and all i could see was white. Then it all stopped. We were all disappointed. We left the attic and all my friends thought it was a bust but i thought differently . A few years later i was at home alone and my friend came wanting to do another ceremony. I guess the house thought we wanted to take its spirit away because it started shaking. We ran into the street thinking there was an earthquake, but only my house was shaking. We told my mom and she called a spirit man. He came in and after a while he said that our house was alive. So there it goes, I live in an alive house.

My favorite snack by Chloe C.

My favorite snack is peanut butter cheese crackers. they smell like peanut butter and taste delicious. They look like orange crackers with peanut butter in between. When I eat them I hear a crunch sound. They feel like crackers, I love them.
If my snack could have a superpower, I would like it to be the power to make me have a better day.  It could also give you energy when you don’t have much, and help you have a better day.

My House by Morgan W.

My House by Morgan W.

My house is a special place because it is where my family lives.  My music room is very memorable. My home is different from anywhere else because it is mine and my family’s , but no one else’s. My house is approximately 300 years old and I think that is very exciting. There are no secrets about the house , but there are lots of old fire places, narrow doors and steep stairs from the olden days.

Mr. Shower by Anjali D

Mr. Shower

Mr. Shower got a cold,
Though he tried to be bold,
He couldn’t spray any water
So the people stayed dirty,
Till they were thirty
And then the shower got better,
By sending a letter,

To the plumber.

Home by Anjali D.

Home

Soft pitter patting of feet
Loud noises of pots and pans
Nice, lush carpets
The fridge that always warms up
Soft warm lights
A secret chest filled with surprises
Smells of delicious baked food
Homework rustling to get done
Outrageous meows from my big-mouthed cat
Cushions are soft,
Trashes are smelly,
But there is happiness in this house
Or at least most of the time.

I remember when I got my cat by Lydia G.

I remember when I got my cat

I remember when I got my cat. He had sharp little claws, black and grayish fur, green eyes, long whiskers, and fuzzy ears. He was fluffy and soft. He loved to play with all of his new toys we had got him. When he went to bed he would purr during his sleep. When he went outside he would chase different animals.

STRAWBERRIES! by Lydia G.

STRAWBERRIES!
               By: Lydia G.

My favorite snack is strawberries! They’re red and have little seed with green leaves. When you bite them they are quiet. They smell sweet and ripe. They taste sweet. They feel soft and juicy. If they had a superpower it would be after you eat them you can jump super high! Strawberries are my favorite snack.

Fezziwig by Janie M.

Fezziwig
By Janie M.

I remember when I would use my dog, Fezziwig, as a pillow. When I was playing with my dolls and stuffed animals my dog would lay right next to me, just watching. Then, when I was starting to get tired, I would grab a stuffed animal and I would lay my head on his stomach till I fell asleep.

I remember learning to ride a two wheeler. by Katherine C.

I remember learning to ride a two wheeler.
By: Katherine C.

I was riding my bike, and my dad said it was time to take off those training wheels. A few days later, I tried riding my bike without the training wheels. We have a sand driveway so it was hard to learn to ride a two wheeler. I was so shaky, I said ‘’ don’t let go.’’ My dad thought was getting the hang of it. So he let go, but I did not want him to. I was half way down the driveway, when I slipped and the handle bar went into my stomach. I still have the scar. I was in tears, and I was so mad he had let go. I said ‘’I am never riding my bike again!!!’’ I screamed and stomped into the house. In about week, I got back on that two wheeler and I learned how to do it. Now I really love to bike!

I REMEMBER WHEN............... By: Sara J

I REMEMBER WHEN...............
                                         By: Sara J

I remember when my little brother was born.
When my mother told me I was going to have a little brother, I cried. I cried because I had wanted a little brother soooooooooo badly and I cried because I didn’t want one ether. Now that he is born I regret saying that or even thinking about it. Camy is the sunshine in my life, he makes me happy when I am crying. I also remember my nana saying this on the boat to Boston to see my mom,”I hope you remember everything that is happening right now, because I want you to remember this for your whole life.”

It was a hard time for me. My mom had gone up to Boston two weeks before her due date(so she could be safe) and she lived with my aunt for the two weeks.
Two days before her due date she was called in to the hospital for a check up. The doctors thought she was having him, so my dad drove up to her, but it was a false alarm. My dad stayed in Boston with my mom, so I stayed on the island with my nana and papa. They had come a month earlier to help my mom, fortunately they were there to take care of me.

My nana and papa drove up to the hospital and I got to see my little baby brother. I was so excited to see my mom too because I hadn’t had seen her in two weeks!
And so that’s the story of when my little brother was born.

Goldfish by Sara J.

Goldfish
“The snack that smiles back, Goldfish!!!”
                            By: Sara J.
My favorite snack, would have to be............. GOLDFISH!!!
I have it every day for snack! It’s my favorite!
It feels rough from the salt and sugar. If you suck on them your tongue starts to feel sore, but they taste.......AMAZING!!!!
They smell cheesy and crackery(whatever that means!).
Then the final test...... tasting!
They taste soooooooooooooooooooooo good they just melt in your mouth. You also have that cheesy after taste, that is delightful!!!!!! : D
If goldfish could have a superpower, I think it would have to be this:
If you eat goldfish, it will allow you to go as deep underwater as you want for however long you want. That would be AWESOME!!

Lemon Crisp Cookies

"They feel crumbly and smushy,
It smells like lemon in a nice twisted way.
They look scrumptious, fit for a king,
The sound of tiny 'eat me!'s are emitted from the cookies.
The taste of these delicious cookies are indescribable to man kind."

Almond Milk Moon

I've heard the sound
of the scrumptious
Late at night
the moon full of almond milk
cats circling my feet

I wipe the crumbly sandman
from my eyes
sit with a plate
of the thing I most appreciate
something sweet
